What Is Release Paper (Release Liner)?
Release paper, also known as a release liner or backing liner, is a specially treated paper or film material designed to prevent pressure-sensitive adhesive surfaces from sticking prematurely during manufacturing, storage, and application.
The surface of release paper is coated on one or both sides with a low surface energy release coating, typically silicone, which allows adhesive materials to be easily separated when needed.
Release papers are available in various base materials, surface finishes, colors, and coating structures, with or without printing. They are widely used in medical tapes, adhesive bandages, labels, protective films, and other pressure-sensitive adhesive products where clean and stable release is required.

Types of Release Paper
1. Glassine Release Paper
Glassine paper is a supercalendered, dense, smooth paper, commonly used as a base paper for release liners.
Features: High density and high surface smoothness, semi-transparent, typically coated with silicone release coating, stable and controllable release force.
2. SCK Release Paper (Super Calendered Kraft)
SCK paper is a super calendered kraft paper, commonly used as a release liner base paper, especially in the US market.
Features: Based on kraft paper, super calendered, opaque, with relatively lower cost.
3. CCK Release Paper (Clay Coated Kraft)
CCK paper is clay coated kraft paper, where a clay coating is applied to improve surface smoothness.
Features: Kraft paper with clay coating, surface smoothness between SCK and glassine, with a more solid and rigid structure.
4. MFK Release Paper (Machine Finished Kraft)
MFK paper is machine finished kraft paper, used in applications where high surface smoothness is not required.
Features: Machine-made base paper without intensive calendering, relatively rough surface, lowest cost option.
5. MG Release Paper (Machine Glazed Paper)
MG paper is machine glazed paper, where one side is glazed to achieve a smooth surface.
Features: Single-side high gloss surface, one side suitable for silicone coating, the other side is standard paper surface.
Among different types of release paper shown above, glassine release paper is the most widely used option for medical tapes and high-performance adhesive products, offering superior surface smoothness and stable release behavior.
Kraft-based release papers such as SCK and CCK are mainly selected for industrial and packaging applications where cost or mechanical strength is prioritized over release precision.
